I have a 1980 CJ7. The engine (258-6cyl) removed due to needing a rebuild. I have an opportunity to purchase a low miles engine 4.0 from a 92 wrangler. What to consider for possibly installing it in the CJ, if at all. Appreciate all input. Thanks!

Do you want to keep the fuel injection? (the Mopar MPI) I would.

If so, you'll need a crank position sensor (CPS) for the new engine. The original position for the 4.0L CPS is on the flywheel, and the 4.0L bell has a window for mounting it. You can either move the CPS to the front of the engine (HESCO kit, ca $300 IIRC) or have your bell machined to accept the CPS. Novak will do this for you, and they have some pictures on their site.

You'll also need the proper fuel pump for MPI. You can use a Wrangler tank with a fuel pump in the tank, or mount an external fuel pump.

Otherwise it's just a matter of dragging all the MPI bits over to the CJ.

If you want a carb, the '81 or later 258 intake will fit on the 4.0L head with possibly a little filing to get the index pins to line up. You have to use the 4.0L exhaust manifold. You may have to sort out the accessory mounting with the new manifold. The 4.0L crank has a different snout length from the 258 crank, and the accessory belts and pullies don't mix.

There's a forum out there that deals specifically with putting the 4.0L into other Jeeps. I can't find it rithg now - I have the link at home. Maybe someone else can point you to it now.

You can also put the 258 crank into a 4.0L block to make a 4.6L engine. www.jeepstrokers.com
