Just had it replaced for my 1961 Cj5 ( has the 4 cyl.)
The mechanic said that they no longer make the part so he had to make one out of rope. I was just looking for some input on this.

Rear crank seal, rear main seal. Rope seals are common, and an older style; they work. You could cut a rope seal for another engine to length if you didn't have the seal for the F134.

Rubber seals are better. See above.

If the rope seal does not leak within the next few months, it should be fine for a long time. If it leaks, take it back with a printout of the above page.

Well it's leaking and it has only been a few days, does it take a while for the rope to swell and stop leaking? Or is it not working?

The seal should work right from the start.

Another comment - why aren't you doing this yourself? Owning an old car that you can't work on yourself will get very expensive. Replacing the rear main seal is not that hard a job.
