Brakes clicking ("er, er, er")

    Well on my Jeep Truck, which has 11 inch drums, identical to all other Jeep CJ drums, is making an odd noise. I know whats causing it, the shoes are just barely touching the drum. This is only happening on the rear. The brakes are brand new, and the drums were turned.

    the sound only is audible at low crawl speeds like when making a sharp turn or parking. The shoe adjusters are turned so that the shoes can retract fully. Still makes the noise, which sounds like a squeaky wooden desk. the parking brake is not installed yet so it doesn't work, can't be that.

    how do i solve this? Do I need to sand the shoes down?

    It may not be your brakes. On the old jeep trucks and wagons that had the 2 piece axles, wear between the hub and axle would cause that kind of noise. The manual calls for to tighten the nut to the proper torque. If that does not work, paint the end of the axle with white lead, reinstall the hub and tighten to specs.
    On mine, since white lead is almost non-existence now, I pulled the hub off, cleaned it good and the end of the axle also,put it back together and retorqued it and it has been quite ever since.

    Did you install them with primary shoe in the right side?

    yeah shoes installed right.

    I cleaned everything very well. This is the Timkin axle (semi floating?)

    the torque spec is about 200 ft-lbs, my 1/2 inch breaker bar goes to 160 :( I got it as close as I could.

    please explain what the white lead does?

    I have no idea what the white lead does, my guess is it takes up any play that could be possible between the axle and hub. On my truck, I used a 2 foot breaker bar, and slid on a 3 foot piece of pipe and tightened the crap out of it, most likely more like 250 ft pounds of torque. Its did not squeak any more. If that had not worked I was going to try wrapping the axle in plumbers tape. The over tightening of the nut fixed it, has not squeaked in over 5 years now.

    not sure its the axles though, mine were perfect when I put them back in. NO wear what so ever... tomorrow I will take the drums back off and mes with it.

    that's your problem. the hub isn't tight enough on the axle.

    could hit it with an impact and snug it up about 1/4-1/2 turn and see if it goes away.
