I would re-route that fuel filter away from the exhaust. Since you dont have a speedo that gives rise to buying a GPS. :D:twisted:

Interesting paint job it has, looks like an easy project, just need to clean everything up and repaint it. Of course, its a Jeep, NEVER goes like that anyway.

I bought it with the intent of having a fair weather/weekend cruiser. I don't plan on ever doing any SERIOUS wheeling in er but I didn't want something I'd ever be afraid of scratching up. Can you guys tell me the story with the twin sticks, what the deal is with the oil vent going back up to the air filter, and anything else you can think of?
    Thanks!

HEI, V6, and is that an overdrive lever I see? Looks solid, just a bit grimey.

Nice find, you have a single stick transfer case [D-18], most likely a T14 transmission, and I believe the stick inbetween is an overdrive, or possibly a PTO. Look on the back of your transfer case to the left of the parking brake drum looking forward, something should be bolted to the transfercase.

Degrease it, check the safety items and fluids and drive it around for a bit before you start tearing into it. I wish that's what I did with mine, it's been apart for three years now and I have about $5K into parts just sitting in my garage for it, including a complete rebuilt drive train.

could verify that 3rd stick with a shot of the tcase from the drivers side, but is where my overdrive stick is, and looks like my oveerdrive stick
tell you what, go out and put it in first, and then take off with that stick all the way back, then take off with it all the way forward, forward is overdrive and should be a lot higher geared.
    the hei conversion isway cool
oh that v6 in a 70 means a t86 tranny is factory origonal
you could twin stick the t case but that would be if you were going to wheel it
has some neat mods to it like has been switched over to saginaw steering, is that an electric fan in front ofthe radiator? oh, looks to have a shacle lift to it by the front shackles.
so it looks like a steal, like mentioned, drive it around a bit before tearing into it, learn just how cool a cj5 is, it will make the resolve to fix her up more, and it will just be a blast doing it. I have huge plans for my 70 but I love driving it every weekend so It gets all the smaller projects done till next winter when she will be garaged anyway.

Are you sure aout that? My early 67 had a T-86 stock and my 68 parts Jeep is a T-14. I think the T-86 was only used part way through 1967, then they switched to the T-14

Wow I am jealous. That thing is in mint condition as far as I'm concerned (New England boy here).

Definitly drive it around town for a while before you tear it apart.

If you don't mind me asking, how much?

I could be wrong, but my 70 has a t 86 and every thing I have read they put the t86 behind the v6
however, it is rare to find a jeep factory original, look at al the mods on that one.

I keep lookingat that oil bath air fikter and wondering about the 2 hoses, mine came with just one, I replaced the oilbath with a more modern unit and vented it into the bottom of the unit, but 2? would love to hear the engineering stor y behind that.

I agree. My late '66' or early '67' came with a T86. Unfortunately it didn't last too long, but fortunately it was under warranty. The dealer rebuilt it, but soon I heard about the 'new' T14 that seemed stronger and was syncromesh in first gear. I traded my T-86 for the T14. The T-14 is still there, doing fine.

Fourth picture from the top sure looks like an OD linkage above the parking brake!
    Looks good, nice find.

    Looks like a keeper, congrats!

T-14 would be stock for '70... and I spy an OD... so would make it the 10x29 spline unit, once verified.

Looking inside the rear drums, also appears to have the flanged D44, yes? Lets see a pic of the rear hub to confirm.

Power Saginaw steering already done for you, score.

Twin sticks? Eh, don't worry about them for now.

For now, maybe get the right length plug wires (order wires for '76 Buick Skylark w/350 - same price as V6, two extra lengths for better fit, HEI was stock), check out the vac advance on the HEI (we need pics of the reluctor/pickup coil to see odd or even - engine does appear to be stock 225), get the brakes bled and wheel cylinders/master rebuilt as necessary, adjust the clutch, check all grounds and gauges, get the radiator brazed, fix up that fuel filter, drain and fill the diffs (grey rtv works great on the gaskets), search this forum for "knuckle pudding" and/or "bentonite grease," and let's also see a pic of the backside of your alternator. Once you get all that done, do a search on the "tractor enamel" I mentioned; good and inexpensive way to get you through the summer at the very least.

What's up with the wire heading off toward the passenger hood hinge?

Thanks for all the replies guys. I broke down and started sanding on er, just had to get rid of that hideous camo paint job. I think the PO mistook a grinder for a DA while doing their "body work" because there are grind marks all over the 5. I've got it all sanded down and sprayed with rustoleum dark gray primer. Obviously this isn't the "right" way of painting a vehicle but o'well. I also opted to replace the oil bath filter for a more conventional filter. She has caused me my first bit of fuss. I went out to fire her up forgetting it was still in gear so it jumped a little bit but luckily it was already pulled tight up against a trailer. Problem is that after realizing my mistake I tried putting it in neutral, turn the key and not even a click. I don't know what the problem is but I think I'm just going to make a new wiring harness. If anyone has a wiring diagram it'd be a huge help.
    Thanks!

Well I got a bit anxious and sanded the old girl down this weekend. I know its not the right way of painting it but its good enough for me for the time being. I also replaced the oil bath filter with a more conventional filter, looks much better and hopefully less hassle. The 5 did give me my first bit of trouble yesterday. I went to fire it up forgetting it was still in gear. It of course tried to turn over while at the same time lurching into the trailer I have it parked up against; after that I tried starting er in neutral and I get nothing not even a click. Of course that frustrated the hell out of me so I began tearing out all the wiring trying to find the culprit unsuccessfully. The good thing about the wiring trouble is that I was planning on rewiring the lights anyway so I think I'll just go ahead and build a whole new harness. If anyone's got a wiring diagram I'd love to have it! It was mentioned that it may have a lift on it already? Seems like a little guy to have a lift (sitting on 31's right now).
