Trying to remove the OD, down to barrel gear, snap ring and washer already removed. I've spun the lock nut out, but it's bottomed against the back of the planetaries and still won't come free. The barrel is stuck in there tight. Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I've removed and reinstalled this thing a bunch of times, can't remember if there was a trick to this or not. I checked Herm's instructions, says I did it in the right order.

Make sure you don't have any tension in the drive train. I have found that it can get a little bound up. If needed retighten the nut (socket head nut) and wiggle the driver train - I have even had to pull the drive lines to get it to free up.

I've got both driveshafts loose, the t-case is loose, I've tried trans in gear t-case in neutral bump the starter, trans in neutral t-case in gear bump the starter, trans in neutral t-case in neutral bump the starter, no joy. The nut is still on threads; I'm spinning lefty loosey and it is putting some pressure onto the teeth of the planetaries. I thought last time I took this out the nut came loose before contacting the planetaries.

You should be able to pry the barrel gear back enough to clear the remaining threads. It should slide back on the splines by whatever amount you have already loosened the nut. It may just be a little stuck on the splines.

Ya - your definitly bound up on the splines some how. You have to be real carefull pulling the barrel gear back, just don't use any of the small gears or planetaries to pry on. The Barrel it self is pretty stout.

I had one that we had to pull the tcase apart to get the barrel gear to come off. Not a fun process, but it didn't hurt anything.
