I know this topic has been discussed before, but I couldn't find all the info I was looking for when searching...

Anyway, I'm rebuilding my L head. After 7 or 8 years of me owning it...and a few years of hard wheeling...it's time. I completely tore the block down this weekend, with help from a friend who has done a couple L head builds.

I'm looking for info on performance camshafts. I know I found a thread once that talked about a clifford cam. Anyone run one? Any insight on how much of a difference it made? Just wondering if it's worth getting. Are there any other places that make a performance cam for the L head? A friend of mine said there was a JP article that listed a few places, but I can't find that anywhere either.

I already built my own header...just wondering if the header, combined with a cam of some sort, might give the little motor an extra HP or two. Yeah, i know you've all heard this before.

By the way, L heads are awesome. I wheel all the time and always have enough power to get where I want to go...without breaking parts ;)

I contacted clifford about a custom grind cam for a f-head turbo build I am doing, and it was told to hand over $400. I said, maybe not.

advance the timing mechanical timing a degree or two, you will gain some power, also fine tuning the ignition system helps every bit

thanks for the reply. Sounds like quite an expensive cam...I wonder if the L head cam would be less because it's supposedly something they used to stock...who knows.

Anyone know where to buy NOS L head cams? Seems like every place I've looked doesn't carry them.

When I worked in a FLAPS many years ago There were engine re manufacturers that would build up and regrind cams for reman engines. I wounder if an engine re manufacture would produce a custom ground cam ? The large re builders offered in addition to complete long-short block assemblies reground crank shafts, rebuilt heads and reground cams. This wouldn't be the same quality as a name brand high performance cam but might be an option.
