If I want to prep and prime sections of my jeep at a time instead of doing it all at once, what kind of primer should I use? I would prefer to use a rattle can if I could. My friend who is a body man told me to use self etching primer. I thought that was more for bare metal, and it will probably absorb moisture. Shouldn't I be using some kind of sealing primer? He told me to look for the brand SEMS. Any opinions would be much welcomed?

epoxy primer, its a primer sealer in one. Yea all primers will eventually absorb moisture, with epoxy, you have a few months if not a year.

even better, use etching under the epoxy primer.

epoxy primer sounds like a plan. Are there any brands you reccomend? Is dupli-color any good?

I have used Transtar 2K PRIMER/SEALER. Its about $80 a quart, and you will need to buy a autobody spray gun.

I would never use dupi-color, unless I am spraying a part, just to keep it from rusting...like bolts and brackets. Other paints do not like sticking to dupicolor primers.

Also, use the same brand throughout your painting process, like if you use PPG products as a primer, use that brand color and clear too.

If you just need to do a SMALL area, like a 2' by 2' square, just buy some Krylon Fusion Galvanizing Primer. It will last long enough in the weather for you to let it sit about a month. Also, its only $6 a can.
