I really want to do the pertronix on the L-head. Where is the best place to buy the kit? There is alot of different information out there.

You really need to look at your series of distributor you have. Its on a data plate on the distributer. I got one of ebay a few years ago and love it!!!

    Good luck!

I ran one on my 240z for years and it worked great. I think mine came from Northern Auto Parts. I know Summmit has them as well, and probably Jeg's.

I have a Pertronix in my '48 CJ2a, I never figured out what distributor I had, I was lucky because Pertronix was local, so I took the distributor to them and they figured out the correct one, and bench tested it.
I got an electronic distributor for the F-head in my '64 CJ5 from Walck's:

You might consider the condition of your distributor, if it's really worn, it might be cheaper in the long run to get the electronic replacement distributor.

I've been very happy with both the Pertronix on the L-head, and the electronic distributor on the F-head.

    Eric,

I was wondering about the electonic distributor choice from Krage or Walcks. Its only about 10 more than the pertronix kit alone. You say its pretty decent? How does it compare to the pertronix? Does it look like the same quality?

I've been very happy with it, the only gripes I had about the electronic distributor were that while it was a direct drop in, I did have to change the location of the #1 plug wire on the distributor cap, it wasn't the same location as the original distributor. I also had to file the tang at the bottom of the distributor to fit in the oil pump slot (it was slightly oversize). I'm not sure if this is true of all the electronic distributors, but it's something to watch out for. The quality seemed fine.

As for the pertronix, it uses your original distributor (just replaces the points), so make sure all the original bushings/bearings are in good shape.

I've been running the pertronix for about 8 years now, and the electronic distributor for about 8 months. I haven't seen either hiccup. I would be hard pressed to recommend one over the other (as long as your original distributor is in good shape).
