Going through the old threads I noticed the MPG claims on early CJs ranged from 8 to 15 MPG.

Now I realize there are so many varibles that affect MPG, but the two major ones would be engine size and tiresize/axle ratios. I wonder if some of you would be kind enough to "guesstimate" what kind of MPG you get and what kind of engine/tire size you have on your rig?

    Thanks.

I get 12-13 mpg via easy cruising along the freeway, and that's with 3.73 gearing ('71) and 33"ers going 70mph. My 225's been recently rebuilt tho.

Mine was between 15-16 on the rural 2 lane highways when I used it as a daily driver, I have actually on a few rare occasions gotten a little over 17 don't know how, must have been a good tail wind going both to and from work on those few days. I drove it 50-55 mph for a 10 mile trip one way 5 days a week for about 1 1/2 years, I got this kind of mileage with way over 140k miles on the motor. I decided to rebuild my v6 after 166k miles when it started loosing power all of a sudden and would not run after about 20 minutes of straight driving.
I have 3.73 gears and run 31x10.5 mud tires. My engine is currently being rebuilt, will let you know what it gets when its rebuilt and broke in.

I owned my Cj5 for 18 years, and never checked the MPG. I always figured it was "10 Smiles to the Mile"...;)

In the CJ (F134 engine, Pertronix ignition, 30" bias ply mud tires, 4.27 axles) I got 14 with the old Carter, now I get 17+ with the Solex. Only get 8 in the M715 right now.

Percival, equipped with 5.38s and the Warn overdrive ranges between almost 16 to as high as a little over 20 MPG. It's got the stock f-head, with a Carter YF carb, and the skinny G78-15 tires.

I've heard a lot of horror stories about poor fuel mileage, and while everyone wants more, based on what I'm hearing, I'm pleased with what I'm getting. I am thinking about getting 16 wheels, and tires in the 215/85/16 range - I know this will drop my RPMS on the highway, but does anyone know from experience what it will do to my mileage?

I haven't checked it for about a year or so, but my V6 would get 16-18 going 50-55 mph. That's with 3.73's and 31" tires. Engine is all stock with points and 2G carb. Although, I do baby it quite a bit.

I am at 10-13 mpg with a heavy foot, 225 V6 (2G carb, HEI), ~32x9.25's, 4.88's. Doesn't matter if in town or on the highway. If I turn my AC off it does a little better ;)

    I get 14 mpg with 225, 5.38s, 31x10.50s and Warn OD
(if I keep it under 66 mph)
any faster, and the RPMs go to 3200-3400 and mileage suffers

(When it drops to 14 I throw in a new set of plugs and it jumps back up to 17+ for the first couple tanks. I really need to overhaul that 231 and put it in  )

I'm not good with math but I just drove 1000 miles with a 10.5 gallon tank and it only cost me about 120$ this being CA 2.15$ minimum gallon of gas
