Ok, I have a 79 CJ5 with a 304, t-150 3spd and a model 20 transfercase. I have an oppertunity to buy a parts Jeep 81 CJ7 with a 4 spd, could be either a t-176/177 or a SR4-4spd. Will either bolt to my bellhousing? also which is the prefered transfercase, the model 20 or 300? Thanks

The T-176 and T-150 bellhousings are the same. The SR-4 is different. I would pick a D300 over a D20, since it has a lower low-range gear ratio.

The T-176/D300 would be more desireable (to me)
    the SR4 not so.

Yes, but not like a granny gear. I think first is roughly 4:1 for the T-176 vs. 3:1 for the T-150.

    <edit> According to Jeeptech, a T-176 1st is 3.52:1 and the T-150 is 2.99:1.

on my 81 J10 258 T176 3:31s, I had to use first gear to start out.
after I changed the ratios to 4:10, starting out in second gear was the norm
but like Tim states, it's not a granny low
