i bought this jeep a few years ago and gave it to my dad for his bday. if i remember right it is a 74 or 76 CJ5, 6cyl. it runs and drives but needs work. we pulled the tub off and brought the tub out to my shop to do rust repair.

progress will be slow on this since were working on it in between my two rigs.

    (today)
right now im just working on the exterior, once thats done ill cut out the whole back floor board and part of the wheel wells. we are going to shorten the front of the wheel wells so the seats will mount further back, giving more leg room. he brought out a 14ga 4x8 piece of sheet metal and a 20' stick of 1x3 square tubing for the floor supports.

hes only planning on running a hard top and/or a bikini top so we pulled all the snap pieces and welded the holes shut.

Nice. I believe that's a '74, based on the transmission access panel in the floor board. Motivates me to start my body work.

    :iagree:

A '75 will have the floor panels spot-welded in except for the transmission hump.

My Jeep has rust in the exact same spot below the taillight.

    You've got a VIN plate there ... the '74 VIN is J4... and '75 is J5...

yah one of the previous owners (i know it wasnt any of the last 3) drilled a hole in the middle of the VIN plate.

Your Jeep came with a spare fuel tank under the driver seat?

No the stock one was under the driver seat, tool box under passenger. He moved the under seat one to the back but now wants one under the floor.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought stock gas tank for 74/75 CJ5 was already in the rear.

Yes, the factory fuel tank location moved from under the driver's seat to under the rear floor in mid-1970. It's easy to add the under-seat tank to a later Jeep, and many owners did that for extra fuel capacity. These Jeeps would have both tanks though.

My 75 Cj5 had both tanks (front and back). I recently removed the under seat tank to clean up the rust and decided to remove tool box too(couldn't get to it anyway). The metal rubbing form floor pan to tank was causing some major rust. I am having a custom 6 gallon aluminum tank for under the drivers seat, and a aluminum tool box with lock made for under the passenger seat. I am tall and my feet don't fit between the the pedals and that old gas tank comfortably.

He's average heigth and still not much room to drive comfortably. Were moving the seats lower and back more and installing tilt column
