Ok, so I was working on the Heep during this long weekend. I was working on vacuum lines and such. I checked the service manual for the correct configuration for the PCV system. According to the manual, the PCV valve belongs in the hole in the front portion of the valve cover and is connected to manifold vacuum. The hole in the rear portion of the valve cover gets an elbow. this elbow is connected to some tubing which goes to the breather filter in the housing for my air filter. Where the heck can I find a breather for this puppy!? I was at 4 different parts stores and no one had anything close nor could they order it. Help! Where can I find this part?

Sorry, guess that would make a difference. I have an I6. A 232 to be exact. But as with the rest of this Jeep, who knows if the air cleaner assembly is stock for this engine or not. I guess I should go snap a pic and post it. if I have time, I'll do that tonight, if not, then I'll have to wait til tomorrow.

The I6 is still in production as the 4.0L, and the carbureted 258 until at least 1990. I'd say try a Jeep dealer. You mean the plastic gadget that goes in the air cleaner and the rear vent hose fits over? If you can find a used one, the foam filter is just stapled in. Here's one that fits my air cleaner:

I'll use the foam filter you see inside the old housing.

That's exactly what I'm looking for. Filter foam/material I can make work. What I'm missing is the plastic part you have pictured. Guess I'll have to go to my local Jeep Dealer to try and find it.

I would think you could find that anywhere; shows how much I know
it is also retained by a large clip on the out side, or does the housing have a d-shaped hole and it twists to lock in place?
    maybe a wrecking yard also

    D shaped hole.

Yes, I could probably find one in the yards here, from an '80s 258 CJ. Might take some looking.

some of the earlier(?) ones had a 1 piece hose that had grommets on both ends; the breather/filter was a steel cased bushing with steel wool that was pushed into the hose on the a/cleaner end; the grommets simply pushed into the vavle cover and the a/cleaner housing
i guess you could also modify the hole, make it round, then just use a Ford type breather, the long skinny one held with a clip

Well, the part in my service manual looks like te one pictured, but the hole in my air cleaner assembly is not "D" shaped. It is round and very large. I'm beginning to wonder if I even have the right air filter assembly at all. As far as being able to find them anywhere, one of the parts stores I went to was able to cross reference the number, but they had none in stock. They would have had to order it.I'll try to snap a few pics this afternoon when I get home so you can see what I'm dealing with.

OK. So here is the set up. You can see the elbow coming out of the valve cover in the upper left of the pic. The hole in my air filter housing is on the front. IT"S HUGE! None of the breather housings on sale at the parts stores fit. I'm just about to patch the hole and make one for a breather that is readily available. I called the local Jeep dealer this afternoon and asked about the breather housing for a 75 CJ5 and the parts dude told me they are discontinued. He said to check the local salvage yards. NO. REALLY!?! Anyway, why couldn't I make a patch for that and cut out a new hole that fits a newer breather element and housing?

It'd be easy to adapt something. Autozone has lots of different breather filters on pegs.

Also, you could post on the AMC boards or the IFSJA board (I'm sure there are others) and ask if someone has one.
You could try one of the big AMC or Jeep yards, like J&W.
The Autozone here sells stand-alone breather filters (in several colors - bling bling!)
