Anybody know if a Alternator bracket off a 1980's 258 cui ,will work on the 1973 engine block for sure .

OR is there a design change on the bracket ?

    Thanks in advance :)

The 76 and later alternator brackets mount the alternator on the passenger side of the engine, they will work but for the pulleys to line up you will have to use the 76 and later balancer and water pump pulley the timing cover is also different (it is thicker and has the timing tab on the drivers side) but you can make the early timing cover work by remarking the 76 and later balancer and making a spacer to go between the early timing cover and the alternator bracket. I did all this about a year ago when I put power steering from and 82 cj on my 72.

I believe thats the bracket that I have.

    My Jeep is a 73.

I cut it in half and welded in a spacer, that gave me room to use washers and nuts as spacers and shims to get the alt lined up just right.

I previously had the original delco alt on the bracket, and was able to shim it and line it up without modifying the bracket. I only had to do that once I upgraded to a 12si alt.

    Hope that helps.

The pictures in the link that Brieoff posted show an engine with the 76 and later balancer and timing cover, if you look close you can see that the belt groove in the balancer is not centered 72-75 balancers are thinner and the groove is centered the timing cover for a 72-75 is thinner in the area where the cover bolts to the block and the timing marks are on the passenger side of the cover.
