Well I finally got the motor running after a new condencer and plugs and messing with the timing. Then it was sitting in the driveway idling fine when I noticed a strainge plastic/rubber burning smell. I got in and gave it a little gas and the motor just quit very quickly. I tried to start it and it spun like the plugs were out. I checked compression and all cylinders are below 30 or 0 (I had 120 in all last week). I didn't notice the oil pressure when this all happened but it has always been fine before. Did I eat my timing gear? And Why? What would you guys or girls check first before pulling off the whole front end and the timing gear cover. I think the not running was conected to this. maybe it jumped one tooth so that made it not start before then when it started and ran for those 5 minutes all Hell broke loose on the gear. There were no bad sounds though just the engine quiting. :cry:thanks

Remove distrib cap, turn engine over and see if you rotor is turning if it is the cam is turning.

F-head timing gears can't "jump" IMO. They're a helical style cut, not a straight cut gear. If you stripped some teeth off the nylon cam gears, you "may" have lower compression readings as valves would not be closed. You're olfactory diagnosis leads me to think wiring or ignition. I'd check for spark, if good I'd pull a valve cover and check for valve actuation. Start with the easy stuff.

Dist runs off the oil pump.

Sounds like you ate the gears...remove the valve cover and see if the rockers are moving.

Rocker arms moving still no compression???

Gauge good? Got spark? Will it fire but not run? Check coolant level? Hard to believe the head gaskets' gone on all four, did you check head bolts while rocker cover is off?

Have not had time to look at the jeep lately. I have been using spare time to rebuild a 1960s? Pashly Princess for my wifes birthday. Looked just for a minute yesterday and when I cranked it over at high speed with no compression and I had no oil pressure. Does the guage show presure when cranking. Now I'm thinking the problem started with pump failure causing the cam to freeze and move timing?

My mechanical gauge will show PSI when cranking, but I use a 6v starter on a 12v system. Spins it over real quick, twice what a stock 12v starter will.

I use the same starter setup and I'm getting 0. I think that was the start of my problems. Could it have lost its prime sitting for a couple of months?

Mechanical gauge? Should be fine if sitting for a while. Pull the hose/tube off the gauge or block and spin it over. If the pumps working, she'll push oil out. Or, loosen the line that feeds the rocker arms on the rear of the head. Spin it over w/o the coil wire and see if you get oil feed to the top of the motor. Here's a link on oil pressure:http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Tech/OilPressure.html You may have a problem in the pump with the relief valve stuck open?? If the rotor turns, the oil pump should be turning too. Still doesn't answer the compression issue though. If you lost oil pressure I'd think you'd toast a bearing before you wiped the rings out of it. No rings would explain the compression loss, but seems unlikely.

No oil coming out the oil guage fitting on block with it disconnected.
