I have an dodge drivetrain from a 97 dakota magnum on the hook for a decent price. It is a 3.9. Can anyone tell me if this will swap into my 56 cj-5? Does it make sense? Can i convert it to carberation?

Sounds interisting, but why drop the fuel injection? What transmition comes with the V6? With enough time and money you can get it in.

anything is possible with enough $$.

Anytime I think about something like this I check Novak's page. Eric has a good knowledge base that has good, straightforward information about these sorts of things.

It's not a common swap, I've never heard of one, BUT, IIRC the 3.9 is an odd-fire so it could be nostalgic.

Novak does talk about it on the site. I've thought about the same swap in the YJ.
It's in the V8 Mopar section.

Your guess is as good as mine. The guy can't tell me the ids on any of it, just that it is a 97 dakota , 4x4 with a 5 speed. I read the novak site. It sounds like this engine will fit.
I thought about dropping the fuel injection because I have minimal experience working with it. Carbs are simple. I haven't seen it yet, so I will have to eyeball it a make a descision. The thing that is attracting me about this swap is that it is a v-6 with decent power, and the tranny and transfer are with it. No adapters, just driveshaft length.
Unfortunately, I know little about the engine and the clock is ticking on the deal. My searches have come up with very little other than it is a short 318.

If you use the tcase it will be a driver side drop.

FI is more simple than a carburetor IMO. There's a reason so many of us want to ditch the carburetor on or engines here. ;)

From what I read on the RockAuto site, it could be either a AX15 or a NP3500 transmission. The 3500 would be preferable, but either is good. The transfer case is a NP231D, which I presume means a driver's side drop. You'd need to change to a passenger drop transfer case, or change your front axle to match the drop.

Regardless, I would guess that this combination is too long for a CJ-5. Novak should have info on the lengths of these components.

If it's a 3500, I'd probably buy it anyway and sell the parts other than the engine. You could then go with a Dodge NP435 to a Dana 18, which is the first combo that comes to mind. I too would keep the EFI. RockAuto says "MFI" which I would interpret as multiport fuel injection, a desirable configuration.

Ok, you guys have made up my mind. I looked at it today. I think it is an ax15 , but I won't know till it comes out of the truck. The listing in the glove box says AISI , I assume that means the asin trans. I see the issue with the transfer case. Possibly mate the ax-15 to the stock 56 transfer? I have some research to do.....but in the emantime, I will buy it.
