I'm in the process of stripping off the old paint with KleanStrip. It works great until I get down to this red stuff. It's not rust and I think it's that Red Oxide primer they used on the military vehicles.

It's a thin coat I'm thinking I'm just going to sand it at this point or leave it alone. I just need to get down to metal so I can start the body work and Bondo.

Have you guys seen this stuff before?

Hopefully whatever primer you use this time sticks as well. Some times I wonder if our new environmentally safe product of today work as well as the original.

It could be red lead primer - bad stuff if you sand it and inhale the dust.

I suggest you ask on the G about this. www.g503.com/forums

:iagree: There is heavy red primer all over my 55cj, I agree with not sanding it. I have found that the BIX 5min Paint and Epoxy remover will soften it to where most of it will easily scrape off and whats left may require spot application and mild work with a small wire brush.

I had to get out the respirator last night. Started getting a little too stinky stripping paint off. I suppose I'll incorporate some OSHA precautions - pull it outside and sand in the wind. R)

Ya when I did mine there was dust everywhere. I think, I'm sure there is still some still in the garage 2 years later.
