I want a new compressor that will run a sander, die grinders, and a paint gun in addition to my impact tools. Of course I don't want to spend too much. I was planning on the Craftsman 33 gallon vertical, but some people say it is extremely quiet running, but others say it is ear splitting loud. Any help/ recommendations appreciated.

i would stay away from the oilless units because thay are loud (like a airplane) and also do not hold up. I would get a qil lubed belt drive and as large of a tank as you can. The sear unit are not to bad thay are made by Dewalt/Porta Cable.
Other brand to look at are Champion, Quincy,Gardner Denver.
Stay away from Harbor Freight, made in China ( cant get parts and no service)
Ingersol Rand is now making there pumps in India and China, no longer a American built machine
If ou buy one from the big box stores, where do you get it serviced if need.
I could go on and on about compressors because I work in the industries.

I bought 2 of the Craftsman 5 hp 60 gallon oiless compressors and a 5hp 60 gallon Campbell Huasfield belt drive compressor(the later new from a friend that was going through a divorce). One of the Craftsman units through a rod after a couple of years so I wasn't to impressed with that. I have heard of a lot of others having problems with the oiless units holding up.

i got a old 220v craftsman 2 stage belt drive 30gal and that thing kicks butt. quiet, and fills fast. Probably from the late 70's early 80;s. There are alot of good used units around. runs my impact wrench 3x better than my old oilless 5hp 40gal.
