Jeepin, as mentioned in an earlier post, I had a bad hesitation and never did figure out the culprit. It just cleared up on it's own. I was hoping you would nail it down and I would be more prepared for next time.

One of your posts said that you had trouble starting and were worried about getting stranded. I had this problem last year and almost didn't make it back to town from bear hunting. It would crank and crank but didn't want to start. Turned out to be a bad connection at the main wiring harness connector. Near the pass side valve cover not far from the firewall. I doubt that's your problem but it's something to check.

At this point if I were you I would swap the carb to find out if that's the problem or not. Beg, borrow, or buy another known good carb. Also, consider sending your carb in to a carb specialty shop for inspection and rebuild.

Don't let this thing get the best of you. You can't sell it in this condition anyway.

I stand corrected. You'd think I'd know what I'm talking about seeing as I've rebuilt many of these.
    Thank you.

No problem here. So, can you tell me why I have no vacuum from the vacuum port below the butterflys at idle. The pathway is clear, just no sucky. It acts like ported vacuum but it shouldn't. I had it apart four time last week-end to check on it and replace the accelerator pump (see previous post, alcohol in gas ate the piston). Thats how I became so intimate with all the passages in a 2A.

Isn't the only port down low the one on the back of the base plate for the PCV?
That one is a direct shot into the intake.

As someone who has rebuilt many a carb and several of them repeatedly and yet some that went into a recyclable bin after multiple rebuilds. What you describe is indeed consistent with running lean during acceleration. If you didn't tank the carb in a compound that comes with enough warnings to make you scared and a price tag that scares you even more it isn't the right stuff. A lot of time if you know someone with a shop they can tank the carb for you. And then it must be blown out thoroughly and sometimes it still doesn't clear all the ports. In a nut shell try a different carb that you know works or get a professional rebuild.
Some old carbs you just cant make work with out extreme measures.
    Good luck

Well I changed to smaller jets and got it running ok. It still hesitates a little off the line and doesnt seem to have lots of power getting up to speed, I think this may be because it still is getting some rust in the filter. I cleaned the tank really good. We'll see if the smaller jets give me a little better fuel mileage.

Thanks alot for that link. i had already found it and printed it off. The jeep is running ok now with about 16in of vacuum. Im wondering if maybe the carb is just getting worn out? I jeeped it pretty hard on sunday and only had a little hesitation. Fuel mileage was still bad but Im starting to think its what I should expect.

I know this is late in the game to be asking a question, but in one of your posts you mentioned that your a pulling a vacuum from a port above the butterfly. This sounds like a carb from a jeepster. You should be getting your vacuum for the advance from a port under the fuel bowl.

I have been sorting out previous owner problems with mine and have just found out that some of the jeepsters used a port at the top of the carb, between the fuel line and the choke, to provide clean air to a tube that went down to the exhaust where the air would be heated. Another tube brought the air back to the bottom of the choke housing to provide heat to the choke.

If you are hooked to the wrong tube, your vacuum readings will be wrong, and you will have a hard time getting it to run right.

Well i read thru most of this thread.very interesting.i have written down that the stock jet for the dauntless is a #55 .is this correct or is there disagrement.i realize this might be different fo elevation changes or whatever.stictly speaking of baseline.i believe i found that here on ECJ5.As far as i know there is no adj. or size change for power valve.
