I know a lot has been written on these subjects, but after extensively searching this forum, the combination of two things I don't see discussed are:
    1) Leg and headroom - I had a 74 CJ5 (new) and these dimensions were tight but usable (I'm still 6'2", but I'm now 225# versus the 180# I was then). Now, it's real tight. Solution lower and move seat aft.

    2) The possibility of relocating/replacing the underseat gas tank, allowing the seat to be lower.

These come together in that my thought is to: 1) relocate the gas tank to an underslung position (where would that be? - looks pretty busy under there), allowing a lower seat elevation; and, 2) using the apparently well proven "fender well knockout" to allow moving the seat aft a few inches.

It seems to me that this combination would provide the best solution and open up the possible types of replacement seats. However, I'm a new guy to this and would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

never done a wheel house notch but i did relocate the factory tankunder the rear i dont use my trailer hitch so i hacked out the two brackets and put an extra crossmember in front of the tank and cut a hole in the bed floor for the filler neck and moved the cut out for the neck over the hole in the bed and sealed the hole on the drivers side but i have a spring over so i have a little more room maybee you could find an aftermarket tank to squeze in there

Seems to me that lowering the seat might have the effect of reducing leg room?

A trade-off for headroom, perhaps moving it aft will compensate enough.

Thanks, Daunt - I'll take another look at that with your concept in mind . Blev - boyink was where I ran up on the idea - appreciate it. Pete - appreciate the input - think you're right, but my thought is that moving the tank will also give me more flexibility in seat choices and mounting options.
