So I got a new starter today for the f head, but the new one has an external silonoid. do i need any other wires going to it other than what is pictured. right now when i turn the key there is a click but nothing else. Battery is brand new. Also that dist is a new one for me, it looks like some kind of cover under the rotor, I am guessing this is not orig since i can not get to the points or anything???? let me know what you guys think please.

Do you have a key starter switch? There should be a wire going from the starter switch to the top of the solenoid (where I see a small stud). This energizes the solenoid, connecting the thick wire from the battery directly to the starter.

There's a good wiring diagram for the F134 in the tech library:

The cover under the rotor on the dist is a dust cover, It should lift right off after you pull the rotor.

The starter silonoid will need a wire from the start position of the starter switch, If the sionoid has two small terminals one should be marked S for starter switch and one marked I for Ignition............bypass to feed full voltage to coil while cranking if system has a resistor between ignition switch and coil. the resistor was not used on the early F-Heads so you should only need the S connection from the starter switch to activate the silonoid.

Out of curiosity has the jeep been converted to 12 volts.

yes it has, and after your post brian i got to thinking where is the regulator, and i found it on the firewall. traced the start wire from the key to the regulator, put a jumper from that post to the starter and BAM!!!! we got a purring little kitten tongiht!!! I replaced the plugs, cap, rotor, adn plug wires tonight. tomorrow I will clean the oil bath filter and replace the oil filter canister along with an oil change. the motor is unreal quite and smooth. Pics and vids tomorrow today ended with a great day! Thanks brian and Eric!!! Beer is on me! Oh and the floor starter is still there so that will be back in service shortly

Great! If it has been converted to 12 volts loosen up the clamp on the coil and see what it says on it. If it says "for use with external resistor " or " for use with electronic ignition" it is the wrong coil...............Then look and see if someone has installed a resistor between the ignition switch and coil. There should not be one, they were not used on the early F-Heads

For cross reference the correct coil for use without a resistor is a NAPA Echlin IC14

I only mention this because mine had an ignition system cobbled onto it with application mismatched coil and resistor resulting in a weak spark, occasional hard starting and sooty plugs when the engine was hot. It ran lots better after I tossed the resistor and put the correct coil on it.

brian, thanks for the info, he plugs were really sooty, i mean jet black, but not oily if that makes any sense. could be a wrong coil, i will have to check it out. there does not appear to be a resistor, however there does appear to be a regulator, will post pic of it tonight.
