I'm doing the brakes and ujoints on my 73 and there is a shim behind the spindle. I thought it was flat and did not mark it and as I was looking at it realized it is tappered. I did a search and found that they are used to set camber. Im amost positive they were put on with the thick side down. Giving me negative camber? Should the top of the tire be slightly in or out? I will have it checked later but would like to get it back the way it was. Any help would be great.

Those are called Cosmos shims and NAPA actually carries them. I needed a couple to correct my camber angle. I'm at my office now and don't have my Jeep alignment specs in front of me. I can get back to you later unless someone beats me to it.

My 1981 factory service manual calls for a camber range of 0 to 1/2 degree+ (postive) for CJ vehicles. You would want the top of your tire to tilt away from the body ever so slightly. In technical terms about a frogs hair.

Yes, the camber should be welded-in to the axle, and isn't supposed to be adjusted. Have the alignment shop measure and then you can add shims as needed.

The jeep always looked like the tires were tilted in at the top. I just put the pass side together and I did leave the shim out. Thanks to all.
