So I came across a really clean DJ5 body and front clip on Craigslist. After I went to look at it I couldn't pass it up.
So the plan is to trade my Bullnose Commando for an intermediate CJ with a less than stellar tub (shouldn't be hard to find) and tub swap so in the end I have LHD 4WD Mail Jeep.
Pics of the DJ when its light out, and not snowing.

Here is the Commando that will have to go..

Little bit sad but I have always wanted a 4WD DJ.:)

Its 9* out so these will have to do until I can get it flipped back over. Its REALLY heavy compared to a regular CJ tub.

Has the big pan spot welded all the way around but the center pan is bolted :)

Probably have to take this floor board extension off the passenger firewall..

    Roof vent still works.

All the glass is good, now I need to start looking for a donor.

Uh Greg - you really need to finish one of your 'projects'... That's what make them fun :)

Forgot to add - I still have the Frame and a set of axles for the '73... Also the 304, Turbo 400, D20 is out in the yard as well.

    Sumpin to think about ;)

Well, I have the original build page, it's pretty out of date though. I then flopped that one on the interstate. Got cut off and lost control when one caliper grabbed.

After the flop I rebuilt another DJ with the drivetrain from the first and made a whole lot of changes to the steering, brakes and suspension.

Let me know if I can answer any questions. I'll be watching this build thread closely. :)

Awesome! That thing looks beefy, and thats the paint job I want.
In my defense I only acquired the Commando because it was so clean and the guy wanted to trade:) And it shouldn't be that hard to find a 55-74 with a crappy tub..
That thought had crossed my mind, I defiantly want to start with a runner to swap with. Learned my lesson.

How is that frame you have?

    That last link is dead.
Im sure ill have some questions for ya before its all done..

The Frame and running gear were the best things in it - the body was shot. 'Course now the running gear is in the Commando, but the frame is in the yard.

Yeah I'm looking for something similar. I may take that frame off your hands, depending on how the frame on the donor is.

Got out and measured on the DJ tub, all the body mounts are the same as our 63 frame. So my assumption that this will be a good replacement for any 55-75 CJ tub was correct. Only thing I think would have to be modified for the tub to drop on an early frame would be the notch in the tail gate sill area.

The other thing I noticed today is DJ tubs come with pre notched fenders:)

Cool, just read over the whole thing. Are those 33x12.50?

I think I'm going to run a skinny tire and try and avoid cutting the doors...
But that may just be a pipe dream. Once I have the donor ill know more about what I need to do.

Also did Eunice have wipers? I have the stubs but no box under the windshield and no linkage under the dash..

yep 33x12.5 LTBs . I'd go with pizza cutters if I did it again just because the wide tires with manual steering tends to wander more and grab the ruts in the road.

I don't know if you'll be able to get away with skinny tires and not cutting the doors. Stock DJ rims have like no backspacing to clear the doors. The skinny stance means it has to stay pretty low slung for the center of gravity.

Eunice had the wiper linkage under the dash but no wiper motor. I hooked up a CJ motor through the outside to the existing linkage. I'm not 100% positive but I'd bet CJ linkage will work in there.

Gotcha. I measured the DJ & CJ rear wheel openings and they are both 11" wide.
My dad's 63 has 31x10.50s and they just barley clear the edge of the tub. So it will be a toss up a 10.50 will probably rub in the end but I think ill be good with any thing in the 9.50 range. The key will be finding the right set of wheels.

And after looking at the DJ's wiper situation some more I should be able to retro fit the CJ stuff pretty easily, just need to mount the motor and fab up a linkage/transfer the CJ one.

I'm really leaning towards cannibalizing the Commando for the Postal. All I would really need is a CJ frame and springs to make it a roller..
What I need to do is sit down and make a list of things I would need to get/fab to complete it..
Its always harder when you don't have a whole donor to pick stuff off of.

I answered your PM - and you know the rules - if your gonna bring jeep parts to the house you have to take some away as well.

You don't want to get me in trouble with the boss do ya :)
