Anyone got some tricks for putting the engine in? I can't seem to get the clutch to line up with the input shaft and the motor mounts at the same time, I tried jacking up the trans a bit but no luck. Anyone?

I would focus on installing the transmission out put shaft into the pilot bearing and not worry about the motor mounts untill the tranny was installed. It might even be to your advantage to remove the motor mounts so you can move the motor around more in the engine compartment. Have you tried an alignment tool to center the clutch, throw out bearing and pilot bearing?

Update: I got the input shaft on the bell housing and stuck a couple bolts in it to keep it there..The motor mounts refuse to cooperate, and the engine has gotten a tad off-center. I took the mounts off the block to try and get the motor in position but for some reason I can't get it to center.

Make sure you have CJ V8 mounts. J truck/Wagoneer mounts won't work in a CJ frame.

towards the front of the engine, or too high up? If im not mistaken there is a right and left. You could also take the ones off your 304

Parts book says the V8 mounts are all the same for a given year. My book covers 74-80, and there's a break between 76 and 77 (74-76 and 77-on), but all V8s of the same year use the same mounts (called 'insulators' in the book).

I'm talking about the steel pieces. I believe the rubber parts are the same. The steel parts are different as the J truck frames are wider.

This is a 304 to 360 swap, no? If so, then everything should line up.

The brackets connected to the block are off a waggy, the ones on the frame are the stock CJ5. This is a swap from a 304 to a 360.

In that last pic you can see the lip that the mount keeps stickin on (just above the two fuel lines). If I have the motor mount attached it is about an inch off, when I unbolted it the drivers side went on, but then I couldn't re-attach the pass side mount to the block.

I expect that won't work. You need the engine brackets from a CJ with a 304. Year shouldn't matter, as long as they are from a CJ with a 304.

Yea, that's kind of what I thought, but they both look VERY similar..Unless there's some small difference I'm missing, which could be the case haha! It got too dark to try again, but I guess that's what I'll do in the morning, switch the mounts out and try again.
