I have the '67 CJ5 with the 3 speed and the twin stick t\c. What are the recommended procedures for shifting the t\c? Like what speed, etc? Also, is there a magic trick to downshifting the transmission? Mine doesn't seem to want to downshift.

You have the F-head, right? Then your tranny should be synchronized downshifting between 3rd and 2nd only, not 2nd to 1st. If it's grinding when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd, you have a problem, maybe synchronizers. You have checked the fluid level, right?

As for the tcase, shift it into front drive or low range when you are at a stop, or very slight roll forward, with clutch in. Shift out of front drive or out of low range at a stop. You may have to put it in reverse for a few feet to relieve the driveline bind. Sometimes steady pressure on the shifter while backing up a few feet will allow it to pop right out.

The transfer cases on all of these old guys aren't meant to be shifted on the fly - you need to stop to engage them, or to shift from low range to high.

I'm not sure what 3sp trans you have on your "new" jeep (I've a '59 with the Hurricane 4) but you should have "synchromesh" in 2 and 3rd gear, so downshifting between 3rd and 2nd shouldn't be a problem. First gear isn't, so you need to be stopped or be very close to stopped to down shift into 1st. Or learn to double clutch :<)

I have an orignal owners manual Mad so I will get the specifics for you on the transfer case. I also have a T 90 and you shouldn't have any prob shifting from 3rd to 2nd like the others have said. I have tried to shift from 2nd to 1st and it does not, I repeat does not work. I do shift on the fly in and out of 2 and 4 wheel drive up to I think 50 mph but don't do it at 50 mph untill I check for sure. I know it is imposible to shift from low to high on the fly or high to low.

One other trick for getting the T90 quickly into 1st (like when coming out of reverse) is to first go to 2nd, then to 1st.

The synchromesh goes along with the gear you are shifting into, and the T90 and T86 are only synchromesh in 2nd and 3rd. Thus no gear clash when you go 1->2, 2->3, R->2, 3->2, etc.

You can shift from 2nd to 1st if you double clutch. Requires some skill though - move from 2nd to neutral, let the clutch out, rev up the engine to match the engine speed with first gear, clutch in, then immediately into 1st.

On the street you usually don't need to double clutch, since you never need to downshift into 1st while moving. If you ar in traffic, you only need to be slowly rolling to start off in 2nd. Just go easy on the clutch and you can skip 1st all together.

    Good advice.

When I am under a load (ie: pushing a sprint car) I start in 2nd gear. Get 'er barely rolling then let the clutch out. Works well. 8)

Also, since I still have the 9" brakes, I use the tranny to do most of my braking. Double clutch from 2nd to 1st is correct. Not hard at all once you get used to it. ;)

Barely rolling to shift into and out of 4wd.

Thanks everyone. The 3rd to 2nd downshift does work. I drove "The Rooster" around today about 20 miles. It is a loud squeaky ride but everything important seems to work. Haven't had a chance to test 4wd but the beach is close so I'll let you know. I was planning on taking it to Ocala tomorrow (100 miles each way) but it still needs some suspension/ alignment tweaking before I take it that far.
BTW: the girlfriend came up with the name "The Rooster" for the Jeep. Like the Alice in Chains song...."ain't found a way to kill me yet..."
