Hi everyone. I have a 73 cj5 with the model 20 transfer case. I am having a problem removing the (what the book calls) the front bearing cap. The 4 wheel drive and hi/low range rods go into this "cap" or "pan". It seems that the cap is getting stuck on the 2 shift rods. Is there something special you have to do to release it so that you can pull it off. I just wanted to get some advice here before I go tearing something upR)

Not sure if this applies as I am not really familiar with that end of the D20 but I am vastly familiar with the D18. On the D18 there were threaded plugs over by the shift rail that you unscrewed to remove the shift rail interlock detent balls and springs. Since there are a number of similarities between the D18 and D20, it might be worth looking for this.

Its probalby the shift interlock pill. It keeps you from putting one axle into high range and the other into low range. If I remember correctly, the way to remove it is to pull the front shift rod then remove the pill then pull the rear shift rod. Unfortunately to do this. You have to tear the gear sets down to move the shift forks from the rails.
