Hey I'm wanting either to put an am/fm cassette player (dual shaft type) or a cd player in my jeep. I don't have enough room to mount anything below the dash so i'm thinking i'd have to put it in the dash. Would it be a bad idea to cut the dash to put in a stereo? I'm kinda having mixed feelings about cutting the dash. I don't want to drop the value of it or the originality to much, but i would like to be able to listen to some tunes. Also If I were to get a new cd player, does anyone know where I could get an install kit that wouldn't look all bulky?

I feel you pain. What I did is XM Radio mounted it to a goose neck from a lamp. Then hid a amp under the seat with waterproof house speakers also under the seats.

Well, I had to move the heater unit to accommodate the lengths of the cables, so the control unit is closer to the passenger side of the car. Next to it I have a switch for fog lights. If I put a radio under the dash with how things are now either the driver's or the passenger's leg would be hitting the stereo.

I put mine in the dash. I'm not worried about originality since I have a glass tub and aluminium dash:)

What about building a center console and incorporating a stereo mount in that????

Someone had cut a huge hole in my dash on the left side (where the yellow VIN sticker originally was) to mount a CB. I hate having a hole there. I had a stereo in it for a while but the dash leaked water from somewhere around the wiper motor and it ruined an expensive stereo. So I decided no more electronics in a CJ unless it's in a water-tight console. I have just finished an ammo-can console, so I might someday put a stereo in it, but in the meanwhile I'm not too concerned.

What I did was mount an amplifier with a low level input up out of site on the firewall. I extended the inputs to a 5 pin DIN socket mounted on the bottom of the dash. I made up a 1/8" plug to DIN adapter, shorted a couple of spare pins on the DIN plug together to control a relay to power the amp. We just plug the cable into CD/ MP3/ walkman/ gramaphone/whatever, plug the other end into the DIN socket & we got tunes. When we park the player goes either goes into the tool box or goes with us.

I really really like that idea. I've thought about putting an amp under the passenger seat in the storage compartment. I have a feeling that i'd have to be extra careful with rain though when the top is off.

When I first got mine, before the rebuild, it had the deck on the left side of the column. Not very accessible with a full cage. It also had a pair of all weather Kraco speakers hose clamped to the roll bar above the rear view mirror. That system really thumped:rofl:
