the Chippewa Twp. Vol. Fire Dept. of Beaver county PA. owns a 1964 willys, dual wheeled cj5. I know of no others in existance and am looking for as much information on this vehicle as possible. Supposedly this vehicle was originally built for the forestry service, although, our dept. purchased this vehicle brand new through a dealer. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Jacob, thanks for responding! Yes, it is a dually. I hope to get some pictures of it and post them but, that most likely won't happen until after the holidays. If you know of anyone with info, please have them contact me. Thanks and happy holidays!

If I were to venture a guess; I'd guess this was something like the camper special. These originally came with duals, half cab, and a camper thing that was sort of attached to the jeep and sort of rode on its own axle (which had electric brakes). There were also old flatties that had duals although I don't know much about these.

David prz, are you from the area? Are you looking at buying it? or just hunting for info?

Pics of the backhoe Jeep at http://community.webshots.com/album/43220776AswsJs

More than just duallies - the backhoe has a Dana 70 rear axle.

The CJ5 camper option didn't have duallys - the camper added another axle in the rear:

I think the duallies could just be added on - I seem to recall seeing ads for the kits in JC Whitney years ago.

Derek has a Fire Jeeps page on the 3B site at:

    http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Fire/FireIndex.html

Some pictures, and any other identifying marks on the Fire Jeep would help.

Some trencher and backhoe CJ5's had duel rear wheels - in the catalogs I have it shows them with single or duel wheels. I have a 68 ex trencher CJ5 with the DRW - the trencher is long gone , but the front dozer blade is still there. I don't know if its a dana 60 or 70 - it has a 6 bolt 7+ inch lug pattern - an odd one, as most duel wheel trucks seem to have 8 bolts. I have been looking for other rims for it - the original ones are split rim 16", and I want to replace them with regular tubeless rims. I think it may be the same axle used on DRW FC 170's. The really odd thing - at least on mine - is that the rear axle seems to have a 5.82 ratio, where the front has a 5.38 ratio. To get the axles to match, I figure I will need 7.00 - 16 tires on the rear and 6.00 15 tires on the front. I am going to make it into a boom truck to lift and carry frames and engines around the yard. I have a rear cradle mount pto winch with stabilizer arms that was made by Koinig to turn CJ's into wreckers. There is a DRW CJ5 trencher jeep for sale near me - complete - I looked at it but the body is rusty, and although it is really neat looking you could not really drive it anywhere. When I first bought it the PO said it was a Chevy 1 ton rear axle, so I figured it was a backyard axle swap. But the axle is offset to accomadate the dana 18 tranfer case, and narrowed to fit the CJ5, so i now think it is a factory modification, and the tag on the firewall states it is a special order. I did not know they made any non trencher CJ5's with DRW. Nelson

Hi--Just added a description of my CJ-6 Dually that I just purchased. It also is a ex brush fire unit from Texas. Got a copy of the original title dtd March of 1964. Contacted the fire station repair section and discovered there is a guy that is very familiar with the Jeep. Hope to talk to him this week to get info on it. Jeep is in excellent condition, both mechanically, body, and frame. Was stored inside all its life. No rest except on the back floor where the tank set. Now, got to figure out what to do with it.

There's a post hole digger-equipped CJ5 near me with rear duals used by a fence company. The dual rear wheels and post hole digger are supposed to be original.

I think you got a pretty good buy on that jeep. You'll not have any problem getting your money back out of it.

jeepacres has a dually cj5 with digger in their junk yard, along with cj6a 10450.

The one in the pictures - blue and white cj5 with digger is in Middletown Ohio. I believe it was previously in Pennsylvania somewheres.

I think I've got a picture of that digger somewhere. Didn't see the 6a though. Most of their junk was just that... Junk.
