Dauntless starter ?

I have a 53 Cj3a with the dauntless v6 in it and the starter is having problems. So does anyone know if all the starters are the same? so I can just go to NAPA or whomever and just ask for a 66 cj5 v6 starter? or some year?

I was just online looking for one for my Dauntless and was not able to find one. Hopefully someone can shed so light on it.

 

The V6 guys should respond to this one ... but for the nonce, IIRC there is a 225 Prestolite V6 starter and a Delco 225 V6 starter. First you need to identify which one you have. If I had a choice, I'd go with the Delco, knowing what I do about other Prestolite electrical products (including starters). There's only one 225 cid V6, so if that's what you have, that's the starter you need.

I will pull the starter since it needs to come out anyways and see what I have.

 

Are there any auto electric shops nearby your place that rebuild starters? I found one in our area, and it was easier/cheaper to have him rebuild it, than find a new one.

 

I've never had a problem getting a starter for my '71 thru NAPA, Advance or Kragen. One thing to try might be telling the rep to check for a starter for BOTH a '66 and a '71; if they're the same P/N, then go from there.

Just replaced the starter in my '69. It did have a prestolite...now it has a Delco, it bolted right up and cranked the engine perfectly! As a bonus it is a LOT quieter than the older starter. I just walked in to O'Rielly's and they had them in stock. I think that it is a pretty standard GM starter...

 

Back in the early 70's I had the experience with the Prestolite starter.
After replacing the starter drive and having to replace the end, I replaced with a starter from a 250 GM engine from the late 60's-early 70's. Perfect fit.

 

I had a prestolite, it was going to be expensive to replace, took to an electric place and was told it was not worth rebuilding went to napa and they were able to find me a gm started that fit perfectly. I will look for the part # on it and post it or email me...:v6:

 

I took mine to a rebuild shop and told me 49.95 to rebuild. Came back the next day and they gave me a new one as the old one was not rebuildable. Same price as a rebuild and they said it is just a standard GM starter.
