I seem to have developed a problem where the jeep will stall, unpredictably, and randomly. It will go fine for weeks or at least days at a time then , (such as today) will stall many times. Usually it starts right up, runs great and gives me no issues. When this happens it just dies if I'm sitting still or have the clutch pedal depressed, but if I am driving while it happens it will continue to compression brake and run, but I will have no throttle and it dies as soon as it stops or I apply the clutch pedal....this usually leads to a crank fest, then it will go again. It also has hard starts when its going through this....I was thinking maybe fuel pump, but I would think that it would just stop working rather than giving me random short lived headaches.
Already have: tuned up, (cap, rotor, points, condenser, coil, plugs, wires, timing, dwell), rebuilt carb, new PCV, lapped intake valves and installed new seals, adjusted all valves, head gasket, thermostat, battery, throw out bearing...and probably more that I cant remember right now.
Just wondering if any one else has experienced this and might know what it is....thanks.

    How about the float bowl?
    You may be flooding out.
May need a new filter. or maybe two, one in front of the pump and one in front of the carb.

I was having a similar issue, but I actually had fuel overflowing the float bowl, and it was dripping down the accelerator pump arm, so it was obvious. In my case a fuel pressure regulator fixed it.

I have a filter in front of the pump, but I was under the impression that the mesh screen in the pump itself was sufficient. (didn't the come without any in line filters stock?). I adjusted the float probably two or three months ago, but I suppose I could check it again.
Any other ideas? (I will check the float again at the soonest convenient time).

Don't forget to think about things like a loose connection in the ignition wiring, or a bad ignition switch.

    what Glenn says
wiggle them wires and make sure thet're all tight
you might just pop the top of the carb off and make sure there's no junk floating around in the bowl.

I agree with checking the electrical connections, Assuming electrical is ok and fuel pump is ok.............and the carb itself may contain the problem, If your not stalling due to flooding from a leaking pump diaphragm the gremlin for this problem could be small rust particles from the fuel tank are floating around under the main jet in the main jet well, The Idle / Low Speed jet gets its fuel from the same well. The tiny orfice at the bottom of the idle/low speed jet tube can easily get plugged by these rust particles that float around and get intermittently pushed into the orfice causing stalling, hard starting and sometimes the engine will start and stay running while crusing 20 mph + or so ( because your running on the high speed circuit ) but immediatly stall the second you let off the throttle.

I have suffered through this on mine and the only cure is to remove the carb, remove the jets so it can be turned upside down and flush out the well with spray carb cleaner with a nozzle.

My fuel pump has a fine brass screen in it but it will not stop all the rust particles, if your tank is a little rusty inside you may have to put a small clear filter between the pump and the tank where you can keep an eye on it to stop these particles.
