Just to let everyone know. I have been in the process of a frame off restoration on my 1971 CJ5. I have rebuilt the engine (f134) already. And now I have the jeep torn apart. I am sandblasting my frame now (hopefully by the end of the week I will have it blasted).

I am looking for a rust inhibitor to use on the frame. What does everyone recommend? I know of Por 15, but what else is out there.

Also, My project partner (son) is trying to talk me into painting the frame a orange. Any comments on the color (has anyone done or seen this done).

Try doing a search here for rust inhibitor or Por - this has been discussed a few times.

As for the orange frame, just say no. There was a pic of one with an orange frame here not long ago. Looked pretty goofy IMHO.

Congratulations on a great father - son project. IT is a good time to discuss some life’s lessons with your son while wrenching. They grow up too fast. ;)

If it were my jeep I would not paint the frame orange. If your going to that much time, expense and effort to restore your jeep, try and stay with the original colors of the frame, motor and other stuff. IT will be worth more if you ever sell it. I have restored 3 jeeps and try to get them to looking like they were when they were new.

About the only mod I would recommend is a standard roll bar if it does not have one. If your son is a young driver, give him some real serious driving lessons. Teach him how jeeps are much more dangerous than cars on the road. Jeeps can and do flip easily. They are not near as forgiving as big a old ford ltd. If you get hit in a jeep, there is no protection from anything.

Jeeps are best for slow trail riding.

Bet if comes out nice. We want to see pictures when you get if finshed.

The body man where I used to work mixed gasoline with black enamel to make chassis paint. Gave it a nice tar-like finish - much sought after :)

There are a bunch of different moisture cured urethanes (MCUs) on the market that will work well. Check the archives for POR-15, Rust Encapsulator (Eastwood), Rust Bullet, etc. Pretty much all the stuff from Eastwood www.eastwoodco.com is good.

I used hammerite 9 years ago and it was great on my frame but I have been reading about rust bullet lately and I am thinking of using it this time around...

I have lived on the coast most of my life and had a commercial fishing boat, so, rust has been my mortal enemy most of my life. I have had really good luck with Ospho, http://www.ospho.com/.
It is really thin, like water, and it is used as a primer and etches the steel. I use it on everything.
