I have had my rear axle apart for a while now.. and can't remember the exact order of assembly  I have mis placed my cj manual, and cant find a diagram online. I'm working on a offset tapered D44 rear axle. Heres my problem.. After installing the axle shaft, next is:

    1. axle shims
    2. bearing retainer plate(that thick plate that holds the axle shaft in.)
    3. paper seal(same shape as the axle shims)
    4. axle shaft bearing seal(looks like axle shim with a seal that the shaft rides inside)
    5. backing plate

Is this correct so far ? I'm not 100% where the paper seal goes and the axle bearing seal. Or do they go before the bearing retainer plate ?

reverse 4 and 5 and you should be good to go.
The seal goes on the outside of the backing plate; additionally, there should be a grease cup that covers the outer seal to prevent leaking grease from being thrown into the brake shoes. The rear wheel hub surface seals on this seal.
