...how much better the Jeep runs now that:

-it is running on all 6 cylinders rather than 4 (#2 and #6 sparkplug wires were switched...)
-the dwell on the points is set correctly (off by ~3 degrees)
-the timing is set correctly with the idle at the correct RPM (idle was ~1100 rpm)
-the carb fuel mix is set closer to the ideal
-there is an actual exhaust rather than a completely rusted out pipe on one side and a blown out glasspack on the other (not to mention the inoperative heat control valve on the passenger side manifold)--replaced the exhaust with Hooker headers and Doug Thorley 2" mufflers...not too loud...but sounds good and provides some backpressure.
-new coil and sparkplugs...i'm pretty sure the the coil was the original...
    -lots of seafoam
-new aluminum Mustang radiator and 15" mechanical flex fan (which mot only cools better..but is attached in the stock location with just a bit of adapting...rather than with zipties and skoal cans for padding...and allows the hood to close and latch...)

now on to the steering and brakes... the engine runs great, and seems to sit around 190F when fully warmed up and idling..but gotta be able to keep it pointed in the desired direction and get 'er stopped when I want before i'm comfortable driving very far... Need to replace a broken brake line and service the heck out of the steering...gotta love the FSM! (hehe...is that "factory service manual" or "flying spaghetti monster" ??) Then maybe i'll feel like it is worthwhile to get it licensed and insured so that I can drive it on the road...

Just excited that I'm making some progress...this board has helped quite a lot! Thanks guys!

Actually, i've done pretty well so far, bought the exhaust stuff second hand, the ignition components i got CHEAP from amazon.com, and the radiator and fan I used points i had earned from my credit card (amazon.com) so that was basically free... My father in law has lots of tools, so if i don't have something already, usually I can get it from him...like the dwell meter, vacuum gauge, multimeter, etc. Its going to get expensive when I buy a mig welder and start doing body work though I would imagine... The Jeep really isn't pretty enough for pictures yet...still pretty rough...but maybe i'll get some pics of the radiator and the exhaust sometime soon to post up...

Welp, I just replaced the fuel pump. The PO had put an electric one (generic...i have no idea what the flow rate or pressure was for the thing..) on the Jeep hooked up to a toggle switch (same one that he had wired to the electric cooling fan [gone] and the alternator). Well, the thing would make the bowl of the carburetor overflow, and now that I put the correct fuel pump on there, I think that it may have had too high of pressure too causing me to run rich, 'cause now it seems to be running even better :). I think that I have redone everything that the PO did to the Jeep to get it running now...except wire the alternater correctly, but I'm not too worried about that yet... No more worrying about flooding it, or forgetting to turn the switch on or off...so much better...and for $23.99...I don't know why he didn't just replace it with the correct pump to begin with... Oh yeah, fixed the brakes too...still doesn't stop on a dime...or even a silver dollar...but better than it was before...thats for sure!

Thus the common abbreviation DSPO. :coffee: :)

(To be fair, the PO of my truck was very saavy and thorough. They aren't all DSs. Vehicles are always sold for a reason though, so it seems that one or more botched repairs is par.)

The original mechanical fuel pumps are durable, reliable and inexpensive. If you don't have vapor lock problems or fuel injection, I don't see any reason to substitute an electric fuel pump. I'd suggest you carry a spare fuel pump though - cheap insurance. Plus I'd avoid remanufactured pumps - get a good new one, like an Airtex or Delco. Just FYI.

Its a brand new Airtex...$23.99 @ o'reilly's autoparts :) DS=dead stupid? These weren't so much "botched" as simply done with inappropriate parts...

Well, Google and Dogpile don't tell you, though I got lots of hits for DSPO on Jeep forums. DS = dip**** in this usage.
