I'm starting to look for a locker or limited slip for a Dana 27.

    Any recommendations or ideas?

    Thanks

    Thanks guys.

    Billy - It says it's for a 64-71. I assume not a problem for a '63.

    locker

I'll throw in my $.02. Get a lockright or a Aussie. Do you have 19 splines? I've had lockers for three years and the only drawback I see is; it's a little harder to turn sharp while in 4WD with manual box. I have ten spline axles. After you install and go wheelin you'll wonder why you waited so long!! I especially like making the new jeeps jealous of my old iron. :hurrican:

I didn't think the 27 came in anything but 10 spline? I'll have to open it up to find out for sure.

the outers (where the free wheeling hub goes) are 10 spline. inners (on mine at least) are 19 spline.

Also do you have the 27 or the 27a? the 27a has the ujoints.

yes, you have easy to find ujoints. everything else is the same as a regular 27.

I also have the lockrite, very happy with it, easy install. 10 spline here, inner and outer, IIRC.

When I installed the locker, I used the torque specs for the bearing caps for the rear axle...OOPS... I remember the bolt having that sickening LOOSE feeling after it was getting tight, thought sure I had stripped the housing...turns out the bolt visibley stretched... I said a little prayer and went and bought a new bolt... and used the proper torque specs.

I bought Aussies front and rear, but have not tested yet. They do make them for a 27.

Are you referring to the Arb locker? I don't think they make it for the D27.:?

Aussie Locker is not the ARB air locker.

I run a PowrLok in each end, but the D27 versions can be hard to find.

i may be wrong, but as far as i know (and have experienced) all dana 27 front axles are "27A". a dana "27" was a rear axle that was used under the early scouts. we in the jeeping community accept a dana "27" as a front axle cus it was never used in the rear of a jeep, only the early scouts.

and i thought all (at least most) dana "27A" axles had the better style carden-cross u joints. the earlier dana 25 front axle used at least 2 different style u joints throughout its life, the older (not so great) repezza style, and toward the end of the dana 25 run, it was upgraded to the carden-cross style which is found in later "27A" axles.

can anyone confirm or deny this?

and as for a limited slip unit, i have a powerlock and its great. dana doesn't make them anymore, but they come up on ebay and on this board pretty regularally and kits are available to rebuild them for under 50 bucks. a peice of cake to rebuild too.

    I've had a 27 and a 27A under my 5.
I got to go against the grain, I'm not a big fan of front lockers.
If you can go LSD go that route.
    Just my $.02. ;)

    They also used Bendix joints.

Note: according to Aussie's sight they do not make a locker for the dana 25/27.
Jerry I love the Aussie locker in my dana 30, it worked beautifully at Tellico in may.
