I went to install the timing cover on my newly rebuilt short block. My local NAPA did an exellent job on the machine work. I found that the new cam button and spring are about 1/4 longer than the old plastic button and the cover will not physically meet the block. The new button is metal with several thin washers under the head that act as bearings. It is very nicely made but I t will not work. I put the old spring and button on the cam bolt and the cover closes fine. Help!

Use the old one and send the new one back. Unless it is broke there is no reason not to use the old one. While the new one looks better it does not really work any better than the old style.
Mine was on there for 166k miles. When I rebuilt the engine the phenolic button was cracked, I machined a new one and used the old spring and put it back together.

I would agree, use the old one, don't see why it wouldn't work or fail for that matter.

Use the old one. They don't really even need the thrust button. Mine doesn't have one; never did. I've seen/ heard of others that never had one....When I replace my timing chain again, I'll probably install one, can't hurt.

There were ever so slight swirl marks on the button and on the inside of the timing cover after 100000 mi.. I just installed the old one and put the cover and pump on. I hope to do the heads and intake tomorrow. Thanks for the insight :v6:
