Ok. I am lost. I was installing some back up lights yesterday. I pulled the negative off of the battery then put it back on to check for power on a wire and forgot to pull the negative back off and then it happened. Smoke started to come out from my distributor cap. I quickly pulled off the negative but the damage was done. Now it wont start. I replaced the cap and rotor which had minimal damage but there was some melted plastic on both. But the points looked ok but I replaced them anyway. My coil fuse blew so I replaced that... still no spark from the coil. So I replaced the coil and still no start and no spark. Its getting fuel and is turning over fine. What next? I am still a newbie at this sort of thing... any help would be appreciated.

You said you replaced the points, what about the condenser? Also you may have a ballast resistor before the coil, Do you have a test light or test meter to see if you have current to the coil, They can be quite inexpensive and if you own a older vehicle you really need one. IT saves replacing parts that may not need replacing.

Yup, you need to check for power at the + side of the coil.

Yep, still a newbie. Didn't remove the distributor when working on the back-up lights!

Was I supposed to take the distributor out before working on back-up lights? I thought just taking the negative off the battery would suffice... but then again I screwed that up too. Yes I have power to the + on the coil. I found the problem. Under the weights there is a black thing with two wires a black and red that go to the coil... I think its called the spark control module? Whatever its called its melted. Guess its time to upgrade to an MSD or DUI.
