Whups - got busy and forgot to update.

They're working really well now - best they ever have on this Jeep. Squeal is gone, pedal is high, no pulling.

I'm just hearing a bit of a scrub on the driver's side rear now while turning - but not too worried about it.

Other than handling heat/fade better I can't imagine needing discs (and I have an extra set of drums to drill yet to handle the heat/fade). If I go D30 I'll do disc, but not until. Just overkill for my current around-town beach cruising use.

I'm thinking the reason they fell apart the first time was me - I think I spun the adjusters the wrong way initially ... But I did that after the spacers and wheels were all back on so didn't want to pull it down to inspect again.

You can't easily put the adjusters in backwards, as the access hole is offset such that you can't see the "star" through the hole if the adjuster is in wrong.

True ... but you can switch them left to right and get the same effect.

I'd advise to pull on the adjuster cable and watch the action while the drums are off. If the adjusters tighten, then they are put together right.

Glad you got everything sorted out Mike.

Glad to hear you got your brakes working good again. IMO brakes are some of the most rewarding work when all goes well.

I would like to second nickmil's comment that Ford uses double hold down springs on some drum brakes. I highly doubt that was the cause of any issues, the theory is a good one but the hold down pins don't hold the shoes so thghtly as to prevent them from pivoting.
