I am trying to restore my '66 CJ5 to original specs and I am wondering about a couple of holes in the hood and some feature on the tailgate. I would like to find out if the holes in the hood (4 in green circles) should be there. The holes do not look drilled, but rather stamped. On the tailgate, I was wondering if the buttons should be on the raised up portion of the tailgates and I would like to know if anyone else's tailgate looks like mine does on top. It almost looks like they stamped and rolled the tailgate out of a scrap piece of sheet metal. I know this is the original tailgate and it doesn't look like anyone cut these out. AS usual, thanks in advance for any info.

The holes in the hood are where the winshield rests when folded and the one between is for the strap anchor (footman loop). Parts available thru Krages. http://www.jeepdoc.com/catalog/partframe.asp?id=3504 The holes up forward I have no idea what they were/ are for. My '71's tailgate looks just like yours. From the factory, my original top had the snaps mounted to the top rolled edge... HTH!

The snaps on the tailgate looong ago would have footman loops in them and straps from the top went through the footman loops. That's a very old top design though. The cutouts on the tailgate are another vestigial feature, maybe to accommodate a jerry can holder or the M38-style spare holder.

<edit> Holes at the front of the hood are probably for a hood ornament, like the Mack bulldog or such. Not factory.

Chris is right - the hood holes are for standoffs.

However the standoffs that mount to the hood aren't "correct" for a '66- which would have larger handle-size standoffs mounted on the top part of the windshield instead.

Either the hood isn't original to the Jeep, or someone modified it after installing a newer windhshield (common swap to get a better w/s wiper motor and taller w/s glass).

The windshield has the "loops" that surround the wipers, so I will just weld up the hood. As far as the front holes are concerned, the hood had a donkey with light up eyes on it mounted there when I got it. Needless to say it was the very first thing to go. Would it be correct then to mount footman loops on the tailgate instead of the snaps?
    Thanks,

Not sure they came with anything in the holes from the factory, but no one would fault you if you filled them with footman loops. There was a top kit that used those snaps, but I'm not sure which one.

....had a donkey with light up eyes........

I'd like to meet the dude that screwed that down, hooked it up, turned on the lights, steped back and thought to himself "darn, that looks good!!"

As usual, thanks for all of the good info everyone. I am certain I will be posting more pics and questions as the restoration continues on through the winter.
