The plates can be any shape you want. The A-pillar (behind the front window) are a min of 4 x 4, I like a little bigger. The back is best if one large plate (or piece of angle) is stretched between the B-pillar (behind the seats) and support rearward. Connecting the pillar and support will help keep them from spreading in a top hit.

As for bottom plate, just make sure they aren't the same size, either bigger or smaller (1/4" should work). If the plates are the same size it will act as a punch through the body.

Plate thickness should be a min. of 3/16, but going much thicker doesn't gain much but weight.

my suggestion on the back piece of 4-6" plate long enough to stretch between the pillar and support with a min of 4, 3/8" bolts. Backing plate, 2" wide x 1/8"(mini) strap should work nicely.

Most important, make sure you have a competent welder do the welding.
