Hey, was wondering if anyone is running 4:27's with a :v6:? was thinking of swapping in a set of axles under the cj5. Has 3.73's now and is geared to high for the woods. Currently has t-14. and 27" tires. will be keeping mostly stock. Any idea on how this gearing would be? I'm used to running 5:38's and an OD on my other Jeep.

I ws orignally running 4.27s with a v6. I loved it and thoguht it was the perfect combo. I ran 34s with that gearing. It was a little tall still for cawling on rocks, but when i added the T18 it worked real nice.

I have 4.27 gears. Works really well. I like it. I mostly run 2nd gear on the trails. If I really want to crawl, i'll put the SM465 in 1st. :driving:

    Here is 2nd gear.

Thanks Dan was thinking they might be about right but was not sure. I also have a sm420 in the garage that will probably go in at some point but the cj5 isn't really my "project" at the moment R) Just thought I'd jump on the axles if the price is right. would love to run a little taller tire but the 3.73's are way high.

    Isn't 5.38's + OD =~4.88's?

    I always figured 4.27s + OD == ~ 3.73's.

Point being - it'll still be taller than your B setup.

I've always had 4.27's - first with the :v6: in Dutch, and now the 4.3 in SSDutch. Dutch had the T90 - and the result was a decent compromise I guess. Too tall for rocks, but in 2nd low was pretty much the dune gear.

Now I have the T18 in SSDutch. So far for beach running I don't need 1st, reverse is too low, but on the top end it's fine. Someday I'll get an OD in there and that'll help with reverse and overall it'll be more tolerable.

I've always thought 4.88's with an OD would be the perfect setup, but I think it's a case of wanting what you don't have...;)

I'm running the 4.27/OD combo, it works well on/offroad. decent mileage (but I'm running AT 32's).

I was just thinking and rethinking and rethinking this the last couple days too...

what kind of top end speed/rpm's do you guys get with just the 4.27's

I've either got to regear the rear with 3.73's or the front with 4.27's...

I know I didn't like the 3.73's at tellico, but I've got the 465 now and I really don't do alot of rock crawling around here. 3.73's were nice out at the dunes.

Little bit of a hijack but the OD is 25%
    5.38 + OD = 4.04
    4.27 + OD = 3.20
    3.73 + OD = 2.80

    unhijack

As for 4.27, no V-6 but with an F-head, and I liked them. Seem to give me the power I needed and didn't over rev the engine. Of course I could only do 55, 60 if drafting or a good tail wind. But offroad I didn't seem to have a problem on the little bit I did with that Jeep.

Ah...for some reason I had the OD at 20%.

Here is my 2 cents. If you run 31" and smaller tires, go with the 3.73 ratio. If you run 32-33" tires go with the 4.27, or higher, ratio. Of course this assumes you do not have an OD. If you have an OD, I would go with the 4.27, regardless of tire size.

I had 31", 3.73 gears, and an OD and hated the fact that I seldomly used my OD. I then went with 5.38 gears and now use my OD 100% of the time, except when wheeling. I plan to go to 33" tires to give me a little more clearance under the differentials and to help with my highway speeds.

We have the smallest tires we can fit on this Jeep with 3:73's it really stinks for around the property which is all it gets to do. stays in low-range first most of the time...except when taking the trash down the hill..on the way back up the drive it leaves a 60 foot burn out most weeks :D

What about 4:27 with a f head and overdrive?

There are some calculators at http://www.4lo.com/4LoCalc.htm that might help in your decision. I punched in your gear ratios and tire size, and at 3,000 RPMs your speed droped from 64 to 56 MPH goiong from 3.73 to 4.27 gears.

that's what my 6 came with originally. I was running 235/75/15 rubber at that time...it was great on the pavement, could do 55-60mph if the wind was at my back :). For dirt I think I woulda opted for the 5.38's however.

I have an SM465 and 4.10's. I can drive 70 on the highway, decent rpm's, and most trails I don't need bull low except for rocks, perfect combination I think. I don't need overdrive, I wouldn't want to go any faster. This is with 35" tires.

I've also got the 4.10's and it's a pretty good combo with the 33's and SM420. I've checked the speedo against the gps and it's right on. If I had to do it over again I "might" go with the 4.27's but with the price of gas now probably not.

My friend recently bought a 67 CJ-5 V-6 with T-86, 4.88's Warn OD and 31" tires. Seems like a nice combo. In OD, the equivalent ratio is 3.66.
