Looking for suggestions as to the source of a loud ticking noise. Sounds kinda like an exhaust manifold leak (it is not) or an out of adjustment lifter (not). The tick goes away when the clutch is depressed. Listening w/ the aide of a screwdriver to the ear, the noise is loudest from the bell housing. The tranny is newly rebuilt and the clutch pack was replaced a year ago. It began during normal driving on around town errands.

    Thanx!

Mine did the same thing. I replaced the shifter "boot" for the transfer case gear shifter and it stopped, as the shifter linkage was the culprit. The shifter boot is now keeping the shifter from rattling, as it is holding it off the shifter gate. Check it by grabbing the transfer case shifter while driving- don't shift it, just keep it off the gate. I don't know if this simple fix will work for you, but it did for me.

I'll certainly give it a try. My boots are in good shape, but the noise did begin after I put the boots back into place. Thanx for the post.

Say, do you happen to know where in the boot I should put the large washer like piece of rubber? I removed the boots so long ago I do not recall. The inner boot and the outer boot w/ the gates cut into them are no problem - I just cannot recall the rubber washer. It is about 3.5 inches in diameter. Too big to go in between the inner and outer and too small to go on first and make any sense.

Every one of those rubber washers I've see that were still there, go on first. The parts manual confirms that. It's supposed to keep crap out of the shifter. There are those that would disagree that it actually does what it's intended to do though :). Guess it does to a certain extent.

Thanks for the info on the rubber washer.

I was driving the rig to a friend's shop a mile from my home this morning to pull the tranny, when the noise stopped!

I drained the tc and tranny and found nothing beyond very fine particles on the tranny drain plug magnet. Sticking a magnet into the tranny case through the drain hole I finally pulled out a small piece of a tooth!

Removing the necessary interior pieces I accessed the tranny top cover and removed it for a look see. Found no gears w/ missing teeth, but did find a valley on one gear that had obviously been in contact with something beyond the opposing gear teeth.

It would seem this small piece had been lodged there and the ticking was similar to what happens when a pebble gets lodged in a tire tread.

I had the thing recently rebuilt w/ all new gears at a specialty shop. After I had installed it I pulled the drain plug to add thread compound before filling and found a wad of metal pieces stuck to the magnet. I flushed the tranny w/ a quart of gear oil before capping the drain and filling it. Also called the shop to alert it to what I found. I'll take my new find to them tomorrow.

Drives nice and quiet now! (fingers crossed)
