Hi guys, need some help. I recently replaced the fuel pump on my 1966 CJ5, 225 V6, Rochester 2 Jet, made in US by GM, number on metal tag 1026088. Since replacing the fuel pump, the engine has been very hard to start, in fact I can't get it started right now without starting fluid. Also, when it does run, it hesitates real bad starting off. My assumption is that the new fuel pump is delivering far more fuel than the old one and I need to adjust the carb accordingly, but I'm guessing.

Any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated. I need to know how to start over adjusting idle and mix on this carb, which is which etc. Or other ideas if you think the carb adjustment isn't the issue.

    Thanks in advance!

    Tom

If the new pump has a higher pressure, then you are flooding the engine (happend to me, I had to adjust the float). As for adjusting the carb, start with both needles 2.5 turns out, adjust idle to 800, hook up a good vacuum gauge and adjust the idle mixture for highest vacuum. Periodically adjust the rpm. If you actuate the gas linkage and the engine revs up without hesitation you are good. Also make sure the rpm will drop when you let of the throttle back to what you had set. It took me while, sometimes my rpms would not drop for a few seconds.
If all else fails, check your fuel pressure. I've added a regulator to keep mine constant.
Does your new fuelpump have a returnline?

As for the idle mixture screws, they are in the front under the bowl. Both screws are idle mixture. There is one screw on the linkage that adjust the idle speed (rpm). Look for a screw that contact a piece of rounded metal (disc).

Thanks for the help! I'll get on it tomorrow and see what happens. The fuel pump does not have a return line as I remember, Will confirm tomorrow. Any tips on adjusting the float?
    Thanks again!
