I am in to process of reassembling my '66 Dana 44 rear end w/ 19 spline tapered axles and am confused to say the least by the bearing backing plates. It seems like the bearing backing plate is not in the same location on both sides of the axle. On the drivers side it seems the plate is between the brake backing plate and the shims and on the opposite side the plate is between the brake backing plate and the outer oils seal. The drivers side plate is completely flat and the passenger side has a recess/bend in it to clear the brake cylinders. See attachment for picture. I wanted to see if any one could verify that this is right or not. I figured this would be the place to get the right answer.

It really doesn't matter, but the bearing backing plate is supposed to be between the shims and the brake backing plate.

Think about it: the shims determine the axle end-play. As long as you have the scorrect number and thickness of shims in each end to produce the desired end-play then you are good. The bearing backing plate is thicker than the brake backing plate, but as long as you have both in there there rally isn't any difference that I can see. Now, if the bearing plate was missing and you were depending on the brake backing plate to hold the axle in...

It's odd b/c the passenger side bearing retainer plate is built like is should go between the brake plate and the outer oil seal. I would have figured that both sides would be the same, but i am finding rather quickly that there are some odd things with this Jeep. Its kind of like a large puzzle.
