Water pump started making scary sounds last weekend on my '53 M38a1. I could see the pulley wobbling around when the engine was running. Bearing. Okay, so pulled the pump off (had to remove the alternator and radiator/fan to get too it, but managed). Took the pump into NAPA and we looked up the casting number. Turns out, it is the stock pump off a 1963 Buick Roadmaster (I think) fitting a 198 ci engine. I thought, "Naw, that can't be right. I have a Buick 231, 3.8 liter. All of the other parts I've put on the engine have been for a 3.8. Headers, alternator, thermostat, etc. Couldn't be. Well, I've had another FLAPS take a look at it and came up with the same part. All these years, I've thought I had a different motor then I did. Where is the casting number on the block with these engines? I guess I need to look it up to figure out exactly what I have. Man. I don't know what to think. Regardless, no one has the pump and only a couple of places in the world seem to have it. I haven't ordered it yet, but will this week.

    There's a diagram here: http://earlycj5.com/tech/engines/225/castingNumbers.php

Along with numbers. The intake casting # is unique to the 198 as well. If it really is a 198 you wouldn't need casting numbers though.

Just look behind the carb between the firewall and engine. If it's round it's a 198, if there's a valley it's 225/231 then you can scrape the gunk off and look at casting #'s. It's possible that the water pump should swap. Many of the externals do.

Bellhousing pics so you know what to look for: http://earlycj5.com/tech/engines/225/bellhousingGuide.php

    198 #'s here: http://earlycj5.com/tech/engines/198/index.php

    Sparky?
This link mentions the 215 CI V8.

Would that be the 215 aluminum V8 that Oldsmobile put in the little F-85 Cutlass in '63?

Would by chance those pumps interchange? Or maybe be sourced form British Leyland, since they bought the 215 lock, stock, and barrel to be put into the Rover in the late '60's?:?

Yes, that's the Buick 215 V8 that GM used in Olds Cutlasses as well.

    And yes, parts should interchange.

Dondo, if that does turn out to be a 198, I've got a few parts in storage for you back home. Probably won't be able to get to them until this fall, but keep after me.

the buick farm has water pumps listed for 215 engines for 55.00. they show 6 in stock. they say w/ac i don't know if this will fit your engine or not. this part should be n.o.s gm.i found it listed under 1963 skylark they also have a water pump rebuild kit. this should also be n.o.s gm. i have had good luck dealing with these folks.

Thanks for the information. I ended up going to Rose Motor here in town (they specialize in older/rare stuff) and they found a water pump that matches what I have. They are shipping it from some place in New Jersey and I should have it by the end of the week. Ran about $45 plus shipping. It is a new pump, not a reman. It is from a '61 Skylark.
