I probably didn't look in the right place but I will ask the question anyway. I am trouble shooting wiring issues on my JEEP so it will get a sticker. I got the front blinkers both working. I still need to get the rear ones going still. I have switched up to the windshield wiper motor now. They don't work. I broke down and bought a test light so I will not go insane, also so I can find the power sources. My question is are all 3 wires supposed to have power in them? I checked this up by the motor. I even grounded to the motor ground to see if I get the same outcome. My fears are I need a new motor for the wipers. The PO also just has a toggle switch "running" this. Do I need the right switch too? Any help would be great. Thanks

The wiper motor with three wires that I have has one lead is park, one is high and the other is low, Mine suffered from a bad ground from the windshield so I had to run a seperate ground from the motor to the tub/dash bolt to get it to work. Hope this helps, also lots of threads on wipers.

Take a look at the '72 manual at www.trailforge.com or www.c104.net - the wiring between '71 an '72 is most likely the same, so that will give you a hint as to how to proceed.

What I expect you're seeing is that both the low speed and high speed selections are grounded through the switch, so they will be hot (+12V) all the time. Look at the diagram on page 17-4 of the '72 manual. The action of the motor is controlled by switching the grounds, not switching the power. There is a wire (red?) to the motor that is hot all the time, and the two remaining wires either connect one or both to ground (low and high speed) through the switch. There is also a ground through the body from the park switch that makes the wipers return to the park position when the switch is off.

Dave and Tim have it right. If that wiper switch is not mounted to a good ground, it will not work. As stated, the switch actually switches ground not power.

Well here is what I have done. Myself and another guy opened up the assembly because it was frozen. We got the assembly to spin and then put back together. we then jumpered the unit with a 12v source. Two of the three were hot and the third had no juice. Does this mean I have a bad motor? The windings and the brushes looked good. Any help would be good. Motors are very spensive and I need one by thursday 7/17/08. Thank you.

Did you follow the diagram in the '72 manual?

Sorry for the time lapse but I have been busy. So I tested it the way the diagram said and it still did not work. I has been I while since I did this test and my notes on the readings are at work. I also forgot when adding a 12v source there would be power everywhere on the unit. I just broke down and got a switch, and motor. It works. What size fuse should I be using? I had a 20 and it blew this weekend. I didn't know this until I neede them :(. I still have the old motor though. Oh well. Any thoughts?
