Is there any chance that the front disk brakes from a yj would fit the dana 30 that I have in my 74 cj5? I not really pleased with the stopping power I have with my 4 wheel drums. If not what vehicles do I need to look for to find disk brakes for my jeep? Also my brakes are manual as well. Will i be allright with that master cylinder with front disk brakes?

    thanks,
    nathan

    they will not work.

    yj's use 5 in 4.5" lug pattern

    cj's are 5 on 5.5"

there is a write up on the drum to disk swap here on the site, check it out. its for the earlier d25/27 jeeps, but the d30 should be very similar.

The usual swap for disk brakes in these vehicles (with a Dana 30 and drum brakes) is to find a donor Dana 30 axle with disk brakes and change everything from the knuckles out. The YJ axle would work AFAIK, but then you'd have the wrong bolt pattern on the front axle. You need to look for a CJ donor.

I found the 11" drum brakes to be fine on my CJs. If they are in good condition, I'd think they would be fine. Power boost helps. I haven't done it, but brake drums can be drilled to imporve performance. A few members here hae done it, and report good results.

I converted a '73 D30 to disc using the same method described in the Tech Section for the D27. GM calipers, thick CJ rotors (avail. from 4Wheel Parts Hardware), caliper brackets from '77 to '90 Chevy 1/2 ton 4wd with D44 front axle. The brackets need to be re-drilled to clock them properly. You basically drill new mount holes between all the existing mounting holes.

YJ ball joints install in the inner C's, not the knuckles, so the knuckles won't swap. The YJ calipers mount to the knuckles, so no, they won't swap.

I swapped a set of '73 CJ5 axles into my '83. Rather than use the 10" disc brakes from the '83 I aquired a '79 CJ5 dana 30 that had new rotors on it and swapped the knuckles and disc assemblies over. Bolt on swap. Eventually I needed a new master cylinder and I bought a non-power brake version for a '79 CJ5. The '83 was originally manual brakes also, which is the way I preffer it.
