Just got done rewiring the 74 cj5. I took it for a test spin and when I started it up the starter kept running but was not engaged. The starter sounded like a tin can with rocks in it. After 2 minutes I heard a loud bang, so I thought well the starter is gone. Thinking to myself this will be an easy swap. Haha!! I got the bolts off and attempted to remove the starter and it won't budge. Not sure what to do. I could really use some help or ideas how to get that darn thing off.

There should only be two bolts holding the starter to the bell. Try tapping it with a 3lb sledge careful though don't want to damage the ring gear inside.

I tried a rubber mallet. Guess I will try the 3lb sledge next.

I don't want to be captain obvious here, but it sounds like its engaged and wedged/jammed.
Repeated light tapping should hopefully either:
    A) Allow the solenoid to return / disengage (Assuming that you've removed power)
    B) Just dislodge it.
Lots of small taps. No Big Taps.

Even though it has been said a couple of times in this thread what you mentioned or advised is what my plan is. Now I just got to wait for it to cool off. Only 110 outside right now and my garage faces west.

Got it off. It wasn't jammed on like I thought. I didn't see the top bolt that comes in from the back side. Keep in mind I was originally trying to take it off at 10pm because my son was sleeping and I could work on it.

    Thanks for the help.
