Gentlemen, I picked up my '56 DJ3a. Had it up on a rack and my mechanic buddy and I couldn't find a spot of rust or bondo on the tub, fenders, hood or grill. The paint is 11 years old but has been garaged for 20 years.
My question is, I know it's civilian, even worse, a DJ but will I hurt the value of this thing much if I do the bottom in 'Liner-X'? I'm 62 and I can't see me getting much more than 5-7 years out of this before my grandsons starts driving it. They really love Jeeps and I would like to see it last a while after I've gone Jeepin in the great beyond.
    Thoughts?

Thoughts? Well, for starters, stop bagging on it being civvy and a DJ. It is what it is. The old DJs were jeeps. I don't necessarily consider the postals (like mine) to be jeeps as they were purpose-built for a very un-jeep job. But the DJ-3As had jeep/willys bodies, running gear, steering, brakes, etc. They just weren't 4x4. Besides, the only non-civvy jeeps owned by forum members are a few military rigs, mostly M38A1s; the rest are civilian.

If it has lasted nearly 60 years with a pristine body, then take care of it and it will last that much more. No need to line it. If you are worried about its value, keep it as original as possible.

My 3a is/was a DJ. It was converted to 4x before I got it, so I don't feel too bad messing with it. Not sure what the value of one of these is in unmolested condition.

Mr Gunner, where on the 'wet side' of Washington do you live? I have friends in Port Angeles.
Sir, I wasn't 'bagging' on my new find. I'm loving it. My first two Jeeps were flatfenders, so it's really nice to finally get back to it. I was merely acknowledging that a 2WD Jeep is worth less than a 4WD and alot of flat fender collectors and restorers think anything not military isn't worth mentioning. But, like I said, this little thing is kewl. Besides, I have a '98 TJ for chasing 'gator and hawg so the 'new' 2WD will do me just fine.
As for the Postal DJs, it seems like when ever a bunch of old Jeeps get together down here and go for a ride down through the never-never, the only one that don't have any problems are those AMGenerals.

Hunter, the forum has some fine lines regarding context and phraseology. I doubt the subtle warning was directed at you.

Hunter, what or where is the "never-never"?

The 'never-never' is what some of us older types call the Everglades. There are service roads that run along most of the canals that cut through the 'Glades. The last two full-moons, there were about a dozen of us that went for a midnite ride through there.

It's also what they call the Australian outback. Roamed it for awhile back in '82.
