I am lookngi for any drawings of how the starter is put together. Mine has the foot switch to start it. I am curios to know if i can retro fit a solinoid or will a differnt starter need to be used. Also will 12 volts on a 6 volt starter hurt it? I am not sure if the starter is original or not, the jeep has been converted to 12V, and I am not sure if the reason why the starter is smoknig the battery is because of a 6V/12V difference.

Id stick with the foot starter its much less complicated than a solinoid and definatly cooler. Id just take it apart and clean it up. If you insist on a solinoid sell your old one and get one with a solinoid already on it. It should be fine with 12 volt running a 6v starter.

    :iagree:

the advice I was given years ago was to not crank the engine over for longer than normal periods of time; my F4 never had a 12v starter on it.

    Dan,
If you EVER want to get rid of that starter, I GET FIRST DIBS!!!

Seriously, I would like a foot engaged starter for Popeye.

As for running it on 12V - should be OK, just like jpflat said, don't crank it for really long periods of time as it will heat up.

i had to have it rebuilt, they put it back 6 volt, didnt have any problems with it or the batt running 12volt, another problem i had with the foot starter was the contact points, when they get worn the slightest they require adjustment, to me ijut way too much maintance compared to the newer style, not trying to talk you out of it, just pointing out my experience with them

The '2A used an electrical foot switch for the starter Dan, with an external solenoid mounted on the fender. You could easily wire up a foot switch AND a key switch so you could have your cake and eat it too!

My flattie has been running a 6v starter since I put it back on the road, no problems whatsoever.

    Keep the foot starter.
It makes it harder to steal your ride.
Most people have no idea what it is.
