It is about points, would my '80 CJ-5 have them, and if so how would I got about adjusting them or finding out if they are good. I would look in my Chiltons or Haynes books but the sprinklers and the rain got to them and they are pretty much ruined.

The reason I am asking is that I was told I should check them becasue it sounds like I am misfirering at idle it seems easier to fix them than having to rent a timing gun and go through all that if I dont have to.

If it is factory, it should have electronic ignition. No points.

Timing lights are cheap. You ought to own one.

What engine do you have in your CJ? My '80 originally had the GM Iron Duke 2.5 l with a factory GM HEI. Nice ignition.
