Well the beast is alive, after cleaning out the starter since there was a mouse nest inside it, dont ask me how they got in there but they did. We found that with 5 year old gas, no carb clean and not even cleaning the points the motor started right up. My bro and I were shocked.

Anyway, we decided if we are takin the body off and doing a complete frame up job on it, might as well put some mods into the motor. First thing on the list for us is the petronix ignition, then cam. Which cam is the best I saw that the comp cam had .468 of lift which is .067 more than stock and says it will give it a good rumble at idle. I wanted to know if anyone has any experience with which cam is the best and what ones they like/disliked. The only other question i had is would it not be wise to run the stock carb with an upgraded cam???

If you got any other mods to go with post them up.

The tech library here has most of your answers and the search button can fillin the rest.
Stock carb is a good choice.
And for a cam you want low end torque not high end.

My engine isn't installed yet, but I went with the following in my 67 CJ5a T14/D18, no OD, 4.56's on 31" tires:

    Odd fire 231 HEI distributer
    Offenhauser 4 barrel intake
Edelbrock 500CFM carb (may end up with holley T/A 470 if I can't tune the edelbrock)
    Comp 252H (438 lift)
exhaust will consist of stock exhaust manifolds into single 2.5 or 3" with a flowmaster 50 series muffler.

I'm going to run a 1" rancho lift, 15x8 2.5" offset wheels wrapped in 31x10.5's, stock brakes, stock steering (unless I can find a saginaw swap I like). I doubt this jeep will see any real offroading (have the TJ for that) I just want a nice mild fair-weather ride to buzz around in and drive to work on nice days (only a 10 mile drive).

P.S. I saved all my original parts such as the stock 225, T86/D18, oil bath filter, etc just in case I ever want to put it back to stock.

i know this may be a dumb question,

but if i was to put a new cam in my 225 and it has an original 18,000 miles on it would it be nessary to put all new lifters etc in it? or since the motor is pratically just broken in i would be fine?

Reason to believeing the OD is correct i had the valve covers off today and inside the motor it looked like you could eat off of it. Ive never seen a motor this clean before in my life under the valve covers.

YES, you need to replace the lifters, they are worn into the cam. You can put new lifters without a new cam, but can't do the reverse. The cam will wear fast if you reuse the current lifters.

We've discussed it in-depth before. There's tons of comments/information in the forum on the 252H.
